This month: hoof abscesses
Sudden lameness and heat in one foot are the classic signs. This month's video covers what to look for, when to call the vet, and how to keep a draining abscess clean.
- Sudden, sharp lameness in one foot
- Increased digital pulse and heat at the coronary band
- Sensitivity to hoof testers over the sole
- Swelling that may track up the pastern
Once it's confirmed, keep the horse on a clean, dry surface and call your vet to discuss whether the abscess needs to be drained.
- Soak the foot in warm water with Epsom salts
- Apply a drawing poultice and wrap to keep the area clean
- Keep the horse stalled or on dry footing until it resolves
- Call the vet if lameness doesn't improve within a few days
